HONG KONG, 14 October 2019 --( ASIA TODAY )-- Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited (HTHKH; stock code: 215) today announced its subsidiary, Hutchison Telephone Company Limited (HTCL), made a successful bid of HK$202 million for 40MHz of spectrum in the 3.5GHz band at an auction run by the Communications Authority.

HTCL’s utilisation period for the 3.5GHz band runs for 15 years, from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2035.

HTHKH has worked tirelessly on 5G deployment, which involved conducting a network trial at a cell site in Causeway Bay at the end of last year. In fact, 3 Hong Kong became the first local mobile operator to make a live outdoor broadcast via a 5G network in the 3.5GHz band using compatible equipment.

Kenny Koo, HTHKH Executive Director and CEO, said: “Our acquisition of 5G spectrum in the 3.5GHz band marks yet another milestone in development of our 5G network. The 3.5GHz band has been dubbed the ‘golden spectrum band’ because of attributes including superiority of coverage and penetration. This deployment fits well with plans to integrate our existing network and re-farm some existing spectrum to facilitate provision of a 5G service.”

He added: “We are fully committed to deploying a 5G network and developing more innovative services to provide customers with a revolutionary mobile experience in 2020, while helping Hong Kong on its journey to becoming a smart city.”
