Local and international interior design talents celebrated at Singapore Interior Design Awards 2017

SINGAPORE, March 15, 2018 --( ASIA TODAY )-- The Singapore Interior Design Awards (SIDA) 2017 Gala Night & Awards Presentation drew a record attendance of about 400 including who's who in the industry from Singapore and overseas - reinforcing the strong support and rising stature of the Awards among the global interior design community.

The annual pinnacle event of the industry was elevated by the distinguished presence of Senior Minister of State for Law and Finance, Ms Indranee Rajah who was the Guest of Honour to present the awards on the Night.

SIDA 2017 saw the debut of new awards and recognition categories including SIDA Concept, SIDA Luminary Awards, and SIDA Recognition Awards.

Minister Indranee said: “I would like to congratulate SIDS for organising today’s (SIDA Gala Night) event to celebrate professionalism, creativity and distinction in the interior design industry. To compete globally, the interior design industry must position itself higher up the value chain of design, innovation and technology. "

She added that the Singapore government has in place various schemes and grants to support companies in terms of equipment and technology solutions as well as for human capital development.

Commenting on the success of the event, Prof. Keat Ong, President of the Society of Interior Designers, Singapore (SIDS) said: “SIDS has made great strides with SIDA since its debut last year. We are now celebrating the second edition of the Awards which has expanded with three new categories: SIDA Concept, SIDA Luminary Awards, and SIDA Recognition Awards. The purpose of our award is to celebrate the entire interior design value chain, from conceptualisation to actualisation as well as all the supporting partners (suppliers, contractors and vendors).”

A total of 150 awards were presented to 92 unique winners.

SIDA is SIDS’ annual interior design award that recognizes and honours design excellence in the global interior design industry. SIDA 2017 was open to all interior designers, space designers and architects who share the common goal of creating better spaces through sensible, responsible, and innovative design solutions.

SIDA 2017 Awards attracted significant interest among local and overseas interior designers. Award submissions were received from around the world including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia.

China also led the SIDA 2017 Awards medal tally - with 58 awards. This is followed by Taiwan and Malaysia.

Singapore’s SIDA 2017 Winners
Local interior designers swept 33 of the SIDA 2017 awards.

Among them was Mr Dennis Cheok, Creative Director of UPSTAIRS_, who took home the Gold Award (SIDA) and a Silver Award (SIDA). He said," Winning this award is one of the most prestigious in Asia. It showcases the strengths and quality of our local design team and we are certainly very proud that we have once again demonstrated that Singapore Design is among the best in the world."

The SIDA Best of the Best title was clinched by local commercial interior design firm, Orb Associates Pte Ltd ("Orb Associates"). Their awards tally included two golds in the SIDA Concept competition for a rooftop bar entitled “MBC BUFFET LOUNGE AND ROOF”, and the other for “Medical Suites”.

Mr Hendra Sutedjo, Founder and Managing Director of Orb Associates said: “We are very proud to be the one of the two SIDA 2017 Best of the Best winners. Flying the Singapore design flag amid stiff international competition is not an easy task and I am glad that Orb’s hard work has yielded good harvest. I want to encourage young designers out there to persevere on as design is a path with a bright future ahead.”

Mr Keat Ong, President of SIDS said: “SIDS has made significant progress towards raising and setting the bar for Singapore interior design. In 2017, SIDS was appointed by Design Council Singapore (DSg) to supervise and guide an industry survey and roadmaps of activities which include the accreditation of the profession at National level. Industry professionals and supporters can look forward to a series of industry round tables and symposiums to engage stakeholders at different levels to build an inclusive community of very high-standards."

The SIDA Gala Night & Awards Presentation was held from 630pm-11pm at the Pacific Ballroom of the Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore.
